I would like to introduce you to Apple, and Herb.

Apple the hedgehog, was born under an apple tree. Herb was born in a herb garden. They are the original ideas of Holly Moultrie, aged 4 years old at the time.

Apple is a hedgehog.  A girl hedgehog.  She was born in Spring time under an apple tree. Apple was new to the big wide world. Her Mum had taught her how to find food and how to make a cosy nest, and told her a few important things little hedgehogs need to know.  Now it was time for Apple to learn much more.

Herb loved living in the herb garden. She was born in a quiet, cosy nest near the sage, but now she had her own nest by the thyme.  Her brothers and sisters had moved out of the herb garden, but her Mummy still slept in the nest by the sage. Being hedgehogs they didn’t spend much time together, but if they met up at night they had a friendly sniff and went on their way.

Usually hedgehogs spend their time alone, but Herb was a little different. She had a best friend. Her best friend was another girl hedgehog called Apple.  It’s unusual for a hedgehog to spend time with another hedgehog unless they are little babies in the nest, but there is a reason why these two spiny girls did.

I’ll tell you about it.

Apple and Herb had not had a good days sleep. They kept being woken by a ‘thud thud’ sort of sound. Then a voice could be heard shouting ”out!”  Sometimes a voice talked about juice, love and words they couldn’t quite hear.

What on earth was that? Apple and Herb were baffled. Waking from a completely normal day’s sleep, in their completely normal nest, in the completely normal herb garden which was in the completely normal garden that these two completely normal young hedgehogs lived in.

It wasn’t yet completely dark, it was dusk – in between day and night.  The girls could quite easily see everything.

There, in the middle of the grass, was a big, strange…thing.
